ACUA’s Earth Day Color Run Nets $2,640 for Local Charity

More than $2,640 was raised for a local charity through the Atlantic County Utilities Authority’s (ACUA) “Colors of the Earth” 5k during ACUA’s Earth Day festival on Sunday, April 27, 2014. Approximately 149 runners and walkers participated in the event.

All proceeds are being donated to the South Jersey Field of Dreams, an Absecon based nonprofit. South Jersey Field of Dreams is transforming a baseball field donated by the City of Absecon at the Dr. Jonathan Pitney Recreation Park into an accessible ball field, which will enable kids and adults with physical or mental disabilities to participate and play baseball. Players in the organization are between the ages of five and 19 years old and come from 33 towns and six counties throughout southern New Jersey. Each year, the organization takes on between 25 and 30 new players.

The donation is scheduled to be presented on Friday, May 9 at 6:30 p.m. at the South Jersey Field of Dreams at the Dr. Jonathan Pitney Recreation Park. ACUA President Rick Dovey will present the check to Barry Hackett, Chairman of the Board of the organization.

“We can’t tell you how much this donation means to us,” said Hackett. “This gift allows us to make the dream of playing baseball come true for the 285 special players we have in the program,” Hackett noted.

ACUA’s Earth Day 5k has been a longstanding keystone event kicking off ACUA’s annual Earth Day celebration. This year, however, was the first time ACUA sponsored a color run. Color runs are generally untimed events that emphasize fun over competition. As runners follow the course they pass through color stations where volunteers blast runners with dyed cornstarch. Color runs are open to runners of all fitness levels, ages and backgrounds.

“ACUA is so pleased to support the South Jersey Field of Dreams,” said ACUA President Rick Dovey. “Everyone, regardless of age or ability, should be given the chance to be active and to participate on a team. Unfortunately, if you have a physical or mental disability, the opportunities can be few and far between. South Jersey Field of Dreams is making this possible for adults and children alike, throughout the area. That’s something we can all get behind,” Dovey added.
