ACUA Biosolids Management Program Receives Gold Recognition

On August 9, 2013, the Atlantic County Utilities Authority (ACUA) received Gold-Level Recognition from the National Biosolids Partnership (NBP). This recognition comes after a rigorous third-party audit and identifies the ACUA Biosolids Management Program as one that demonstrates continuous improvement in the areas of environmental performance, regulatory compliance, quality management practices, and relations with interested parties. The NBP is operated by the Water Environment Federation (WEF), in collaboration with the National Association of Clean Water Agencies (NACWA), with additional support from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Members include local and regional biosolids management organizations across the U.S. and Canada. Biosolids are defined as the solid or semisolid material obtained from treated wastewater.

The NBP serves in an advisory role in effective biosolids practices and focuses on an Environmental Management System (EMS) which requires participants to implement a quality management program. The NBP Biosolids Management Program (BMP) is also based on internationally recognized standards for an Environmental Management System/International Organization for Standardization (ISO 14001). There are currently forty organizations, processing 12% of the total biosolids generated in the U.S., participating in this management program.

“The ACUA has utilized the NBP program as a means to carefully examine our current management practices for biosolids. The NBP program has also been helpful in guiding plans for environmentally sound improvements that will meet and exceed regulatory requirements and protect public health,” said ACUA President Rick Dovey. “The BMP process ensures that ACUA’s biosolids management practices and processes are carefully reviewed and new opportunities to improve can be investigated,” Dovey noted.

ACUA is honored to receive Gold-Level Recognition from the National Biosolids Partnership (NBP) and intends to meet criteria for obtaining Platinum recognition in the future.
