ACUA grows its green fleet with two new electric vehicles

The Atlantic County Utilities Authority has added two new electric vehicle to its growing fleet of alternative fuel vehicles.

The 2012 Nissan Leaf arrived in March 2012 to modernize the ACUA’s light duty vehicle fleet. The Nissan Leaf is 100% electric, with the capacity to fit 5 people, and can travel at highway speeds. The Nissan Leaf uses a 24 kWh lithium-ion battery to store electricity that powers the vehicle. The Leaf is designed to go on average 100 miles with a full charge. The Leaf can be charged with a common household outlet, which takes between 18 and 20 hours to fully charge. With a 220 volt outlet, using the ACUA’s AeroVironment charging station, a full charge will take 6 to 8 hours. You can learn more about the Nissan Leaf here:

The Nissan Leaf’s pure electric engine provides significant fuel costs savings and reductions in emissions. The ACUA saves over 75% on the cost of fuel using electricity over gasoline. Additionally when using electricity from the ACUA’s Landfill Gas to Energy project, solar array, or wind farm the vehicle has zero emissions.

The 2012 Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid arrived in May 2012. The Prius is engineered for dedicated electric driving capability, and it allows for a completely charge of its lithium-ion battery using a common household outlet in about three hours. In EV2 mode, the Prius Plug-In Hybrid is rated to drive up to 11 miles and has the capability of traveling up to 62 mph using electric power before switching to its standard hybrid mode. The arrival of the Prius comes on the heels of ACUA’s recognition as one of the 100 Best Fleets in North America for 2012:

ACUA’s fleet policy reflects its commitment to: "reducing its energy use and its carbon footprint through the purchase of low emitting fuel-efficient vehicles for vehicle fleet replacement, the use of alternative fuels (biodiesel, natural gas, hybrid, and electric vehicles) in fleet operations, and improvement in maintenance and efficiency of vehicles.”
