Spending a weekend in Atlantic County? If you're looking for an activity to start or end your weekend, consider a free tour of the Atlantic County Utilities Authority’s wind farm, solar project, and wastewater plant in Atlantic City!
Beginning Monday, May 14th, the Atlantic County Utilities Authority (ACUA) will offer public tours of its wastewater, wind and solar facilities in Atlantic City, NJ. The tours will occur each Monday at 12 noon. The ACUA is located at 1801 Absecon Boulevard in Atlantic City. Reservations are required and can be made by calling (609) 272-6950.
The wind farm is the first commercial development of its kind in the state, as well as the first coastal and urban wind farm in the nation. This makes the ACUA’s Wastewater Treatment Facility is the largest hybrid wind and solar powered treatment facility in the world!
Between ACUA’s wind and solar projects onsite, a significant amount of completely renewable energy is produced each day. The really exciting part? You can get an up close view of the wind turbines (each measuring more than 380 feet from the ground to the tip of the blade—wow!), see 500 kilowatts worth of solar arrays, and learn just how wastewater is treated with a laboratory tour and demonstration. Visitors will also see how ACUA vehicles "fill up" on renewable energy at the electric car charging station.
Your tour of the Wastewater Treatment Facility will be geared to the age level of your group and will last about one hour.
The wind farm and the ACUA’s Wastewater Treatment Facility are located at 1801 Absecon Blvd. (Route 30) in Atlantic City. To schedule your tour, simply call (609) 272-6950. For directions to the facility, click here.
At the facility, drive through the gate (use the call box on the left should the gate be closed) and follow the access road. Park under the solar canopy and look for signs for visitor's entrance (near the flagpole).
