As you’re cleaning out the garage, don’t put those outgrown bikes at the curb! Recycle your bikes and make a difference for local families this coming Christmas. ACUA will host a bicycle collection on Saturday, May 7 from 9-2 pm at the ACUA’s Environmental Park, 6700 Delilah Road in Egg Harbor Twp. at the same time as its May Household Hazardous Waste Drop Off Event.
Bikes collected will be refurbished and donated to needy children in Atlantic City through St. Nicholas of Tolentine Church in Atlantic City. In 2010, the church’s program, in its fourth year, gave away over 300 bicycles last Christmas. This program is made possible by the efforts of dedicated volunteers and the generosity of donors. The program began with donations from church members and others who learned about it by word of mouth. The church asks for “gently used” bikes, but most bikes need a little work and a few parts before they’re ready to be given to needy kids and their families at Christmas. Local resident Drew Smith spearheads the work to restore bikes to good working order, repairing and preparing them for reuse, and has initiated this collection event at ACUA.
