ACUA announces Household Hazardous Waste Drop-off Date January 3

Atlantic County residents will be able to drop off household hazardous waste from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 3rd at the Atlantic County Utilities Authority Environmental Park located at 6700 Delilah Road in Egg Harbor Township.


The ACUA’s Household Hazardous Waste Drop-off Day program will continue to be offered every other month in 2009. Materials can be dropped off at the ACUA located at 6700 Delilah Road in Egg Harbor Township.


The next Household Hazardous Waste Drop-off date is scheduled for March 7, 2009.


The household hazardous waste program is open to Atlantic County residents only. Those wishing to participate must bring proof of residency. The maximum amount of household hazardous material allowed for disposal is 30 gallons and/or 200 pounds (dry weight) per household. Participants may bring materials from more than one household, which can save you and a friend or neighbor time and gas money.


Materials cannot be brought in containers that exceed five gallons and no containers will be returned no exceptions. Most importantly, before bringing a material please be sure that it is an acceptable product. For more information, please call (609) 272-6950 or visit the ACUA’s website at


Household hazardous waste days provide residents with an opportunity to dispose of unwanted household chemicals and cleaners. Items accepted on disposal day include: kerosene, insecticides, pesticides, drain cleaners, fertilizer, solvents, paint thinners, furniture polish, weed killers, pool chemicals, rat poison, auto care products, gasoline, photographic chemicals, turpentine, acids, caustics, rust remover, oven cleaners, chemistry sets, gasoline and gas/oil mix.


Other products used in the home, yard, garden or workshop may also be considered household hazardous waste. If in doubt, treat the product as household hazardous waste.


Items not accepted for disposal, include explosives, radioactive materials, ammunition, gas cylinders, 2, 4, 5 Silvex, dioxin, PCB’s, asbestos, propane tanks, pentachlorophenol commercial or industrial hazardous waste, rechargeable fire extinguishers and unidentifiable materials.


To safely package and transport household hazardous waste, the following guidelines should be followed: keep all products in original containers; wrap leaking containers in newspaper and place in plastic bag or garbage container; place items securely in a box for transport; keep chemicals which could react with one another separated; and do not leave materials in hot, unventilated areas for long periods of time.


If you are disposing of compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) please place them in a sealed plastic bag or their original packaging to protect them from breaking. If your CFL bulb should break, please put it into a sealed plastic bag due to trace amounts of mercury remaining in the tubing. CFLs should not be thrown away as trash.



Residents are reminded not to dispose of liquid chemicals, banned pesticides, or motor oil in the trash or storm sewers. Also, please consider the use of household hazardous waste alternative products.  For more information please visit
